Merchant routing may affect your transaction fees

Attention: open in a new window. Print

Merchant routing is an Australian government initiative aimed at promoting competition in the debit card market throughout Australia between eftpos and debit cards.

YOUR TRANSACTION FEES MAY INCREASE WITH MERCHANT ROUTING

Previously, when you used contactless (‘tap-and-go’/PayWave) with our Visa Debit card you could avoid transaction fees. Now, the merchant may choose to send the transaction via the debit network that suits them – either eftpos OR Visa. They are expected to let you know which routing they prefer but that may not be the case.

HOW TO AVOID MERCHANT ROUTING CHARGES

There is a simple solution to avoid the possibility of increased transaction fees – use your digital wallet. Merchant routing only applies to contactless card payments.

NOTE: You must have PayWave enabled on your physical card to use a digital wallet.
