The Rotary Club of Orange Orange Sustainable Living Week, proudly supported by OCU
The Rotary Club of Orange will highlight ways to reduce waste and improve household water and energy efficiency during Orange Sustainable Living Week, from 29 May to 5 June.
The week-long celebration of sustainability will kick off with its signature event, the Orange Sustainable Living Expo, from 9am to 3pm on Sunday 29 May in the Naylor Pavilion at Orange Showground, featuring special guest Craig Reucassel, presenter of the ABC series War on Waste and Fight for Planet A: Our Climate Challenge.
The Expo will feature about 20 specialist exhibitors providing expert advice, goods and services to support community members to live more sustainably, as well as presentations by sustainability experts focusing on topics such as waste reduction and recycling, water use, renewable energy, environmental management and climate change.
Electric vehicle technology will be a feature of the Expo, with vehicles on display and a Q&A session for community members to chat with vehicle owners about their experiences.
Rotary Club of Orange president Sue Patterson said the expo would be held in conjunction with the club’s popular quarterly Family Markets, featuring an additional 100 stallholders selling products including food and produce, plants, gifts, jewellery and more.
“We’re pleased to be able to hold these events once again, after we were forced to postpone them in October 2021 due to the pandemic,” she said.
“Through the Sustainable Living Expo we want to promote Orange as an environmentally sustainable city by providing all the practical knowledge and skills to help the community work together to reduce our carbon footprint.”
Orange Sustainable Living Week is supported by Orange City Council, Orange Credit Union and Charles Sturt University.
Orange Mayor Jason Hamling encouraged residents of Orange and surrounding areas to find out more about how we can improve energy efficiency in the way we live and work by taking part in the event.
“Now, more than ever, people all over the world are recognising the need to be more environmentally conscious and reduce our impact on the planet,” Cr Jason Hamling said.
“We can all do our bit to reduce our carbon footprint and there are lots of simple steps we can take on a daily basis to live more sustainably, reduce waste and protect the environment.”
Orange Credit Union CEO Andrew de Graaff is proud to support sustainable innovation within our communities through projects and events that seek to improve the environmental, social and economic impact of our actions.
“As a leader in banking for the Colour City, sustainability is a core value that guides the vision of our business, for now and future generations. We are a proud partner of the event, working in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Orange, which was awarded grant funding as part of our annual community support program,” he said.
“With cost-of-living pressures, petrol supply issues and environmental impacts of fuel vehicles, it is wonderful to see electric vehicles being showcased at this year’s event.”
Other events planned for Orange Sustainable Living Week include:
- High schools sustainable cooking competition – Friday 3 June
- Ploughmans Creek Wetlands walk – Saturday 4 June
- Waratah Wetlands planting day – Sunday 5 June
- Electric vehicle owners ‘show and ride’ – Sunday 5 June
